A professional young couple, both product designers in their own successful business, require guidance with the design of their new home based in a new subdivision in Cambridge. They are familiar with the building processes as this is their second new build. The clients require assistance in the materials and finishes of their new home, and the design of the kitchen, laundry and scullery.

The couple love the Japandi trend, (a design style mixing Japanese and Scandinavian elements), and this is to be combined with their pre-owned Mid-century pieces. Meaningful terms to identify their style are “timeless, contemporary, chic, cozy, homely, organic, light, pure, airy” keeping in mind the sustainability aspect of the above as well.

The exterior of the home is contemporary with Colorsteel roof, Vertical Axon Panels and joinery in Flax-Pod Matte and Linea Oblique Weatherboards in Resene Double Merino.

The entry pendant is handmade of plywood and Japanese Shoji paper by NZ designer Mat MacMillan.

The roof in the main living space has a high 30-degree pitch which in the living, dining, kitchen opens the space significantly. The entire space is painted in Dulux “Okarito” white, with one feature wall in the lounge painted in Dulux “Frontier Port” render, a textured paint product providing an artisanal organic and textured background for the contemporary artwork.

In the living space, a curved boucle sofa and armchair is specified in the living combined with trendy Tibetan lamb and linen cushions, throws and a dark Ink-coloured sideboard. Ceiling high sheer curtains in Adobe Tobacco combine with light-filtering Thermocell blinds. The blind’s hexagon cell structure provides extra insulation as the pockets capture the cold air adding to a sustainable use of heating and power. Three glass pendants create a cosy corner together with the armchair.

The kitchen, pantry and laundry have a light and bright atmosphere with a combination of Premium Oak Woodgrain panels, Melteca Warm White cabinet and drawer fronts, a Melteca Velour Mist Grey island front and a bench top in Prime Stone Golden Bay Classic-Honed.

An undermounted Alpina ceramic sink, brushed brass tap with pull out spray and Archant Edge Straight handles in Brushed Brass make this kitchen look contemporary and stylish chic and provides the room with a modern Scandinavian look. One of the overhang wall cabinets has open shelving forming the perfect background for some of the Italian Alessi kitchen items. Splash back tiles are White and Misty Grey in vertical offset stack. Practical timber laminate flooring is in a Silk Oak.

The large round dining table and bench are made from black solid American Ash and is combined with four mid-century dining chairs in a cantilevered design giving the illusion of a floating seat. They are made from a contrasting steel and black timber frame and have open weave rattan seats and backs. A BoConcept black Paddle Pendant hangs over the dining table.

The three bedrooms have a dark carpet throughout and each has a different atmosphere. The guest bedroom has a cozy feel with Dulux “Frontier Port” paint and matching sheer curtains combined with a custom manufactured bedhead in charcoal, crisp white bedlinen, and cushions in dark grey/ink and natural with embroidered shiny copper yarns.

Two spacious bathrooms (one family bathroom and one ensuite off the Master bedroom) are painted in Dulux “Parchment Paper” and have graphite tiles with a striking ivory vein, light oak vanities with porcelain tops, crisp white bath and WC’s, backlit round mirrors and black detailing for showers, tapware, and heated towel rails.

The second bedroom will be used as a library and is painted in Dulux “Ghosting” and has linen open weave curtains and a contemporary Birch ply bookcase.

The master bedroom is designed with an understated chic and cozy ambience in mind, therefore uses Dulux “Parchment Paper” colour on the walls. Luxurious ceiling high curtains made from fabric that has a bit of steel woven in the yarns provide an interesting lustrous shiny effect. The bed is in solid American Ash timber. Two Duomo Wall Sconces in Midnight Brass from Nightworks Studio in Christchurch provide a soft diffused light.
